A Note on South Yorkshire’s Watchmaking Heritage

The Sheffield Assay Office

Sheffield is one of only four English cities with its own assay office. Established in 1773 — the same year as Birmingham, and under the same Act of Parliament — the Sheffield Assay Office still hallmarks precious metal with the city’s own town mark: historically a crown, and the Yorkshire rose since 1975. For a buyer, that mark is a direct, readable link to a long local tradition of fine metalwork and a guarantee of the metal in a precious-metal watch case.

Old Sheffield Plate

The city’s silver heritage runs deeper still. Around 1742 the Sheffield cutler Thomas Boulsover invented “Old Sheffield Plate”, fusing a thin layer of silver onto copper to make affordable silverware, and founded a plating trade that flourished across the city until electroplating superseded it in the mid-nineteenth century. Sheffield’s name has stood for fine metalwork — from cutlery and plate to hallmarked precious metal — ever since. The Sheffield Assay Office still operates today as one of only four in the country.
