A Note on Oxfordshire’s Watchmaking Heritage

Bremont in Henley-on-Thames

Oxfordshire is home to one of Britain’s leading modern watchmakers. The brothers Nick and Giles English founded Bremont in 2002, drawn to aviation and precision engineering after their father, an aeronautical engineer, was killed in a 1995 vintage-aircraft crash. The company chose Henley-on-Thames for its manufacturing headquarters, “The Wing” — a purpose-built watchmaking centre of around 35,000 square feet on Reading Road that opened in 2021. The brothers named the company after Antoine Bremont, a French farmer who had sheltered them after an earlier forced landing in his field.

Mechanical watchmaking back in England

The Wing was built to machine and assemble watch components at scale in the UK, and in October 2021 Bremont unveiled its first in-house movement, the ENG300, certified to the firm’s own rigorous timing standard. The site is designed to make several thousand movements a year — a genuine, present-day link between Oxfordshire and serious British mechanical watchmaking, not merely a historical one. Each movement is certified to Bremont’s own timing standard before it leaves Henley.
